Recomendation for 3rd party cards

This appears in the Solaris x86 mailing list

Did the same (entry level U20) and immediately swapped out the CPU.
Here's my two choices for graphics cards for it:

    a) 6600GT (Pny makes a nice board with two DVI ports)
    b) BFG GeForce 7800GT OC (The OC indicates that its over-clocked)

In terms of value, you can't beat the 6600GT. I decided to go with the BFG
GeForce 7800GT card in the U20. I would recommend bypassing the 6800
series cards, because of the high power consumption and resulting heat
    generation.

If Sun support is important to you, then go with one of the Nvidia Quadro
    series boards.
